Group 65 Battery, Fender Starter Relay & Power Box
850-CCA lead-acid storage battery, classic Ford fender-apron starter relay, and under-hood high-current fuse distribution.
Role in the System
What This Assembly Is
Mounted in the front right corner of the engine bay are the Group 65 lead-acid battery and tray, the iconic Ford inner-fender starter relay/solenoid, heavy-gauge copper positive and ground cables, and the driver-side under-hood Power Distribution Box (PDB) housing maxi-fuses and the EEC/Fuel Pump relays.
Mechanics & Physics
How the Subcomponents Work Together
Two-Stage Ford Starter Switching: Even after switching to a PMGR starter with a piggyback solenoid on the motor, 1994 F-150s retained the classic fender-mounted starter relay on the right inner fender apron. The battery positive lug on that fender relay serves as the primary junction post for the truck’s main power feeds, while its switched terminal sends engagement power down to the starter’s S-terminal only when the ignition key is turned to START.
