Deep Dives & Mechanical Theory
Inside the Mazda M5OD-R2 5-Speed Manual Transmission
Introduced for light-duty Ford F-150 and Bronco trucks in 1988, the Mazda-designed M5OD-R2 (M5R2) replaced older cast-iron 4-speeds with a lightweight, rib-reinforced die-cast aluminum housing, an integral bellhousing, a 0.80:1 fifth-gear overdrive, and full synchronization across all five forward gears plus Reverse.
The 11-Inch Diaphragm Clutch & Concentric Slave Cylinder System
To handle the low-RPM torque of the 4.9L inline-six without heavy pedal effort, the 1994 F-150 pairs a 280 mm (11-inch) Belleville diaphragm clutch assembly with an internal hydraulic Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC) that slides directly over the transmission input quill.
The Ford 4.9L (300 CID) Inline-Six Engine Architecture
Built from 1965 through 1996, the 4.9L (300 cubic inch) inline-six is one of the most durable truck engines ever manufactured—combining a deep-skirt seven-main-bearing block, zero timing chain (direct helical gear-to-gear cam drive), and peak torque delivered right off idle.
EEC-IV Electronic Control & TFI-IV Ignition Architecture
The 1994 F-150 4.9L coordinates spark advance and fuel injector pulsewidth through Ford’s EEC-IV Powertrain Control Module and the gear-driven TFI-IV (Thick Film Integrated) distributor system.
Featured Components
Piston, Rings, Wrist Pin & Connecting Rod
Turns combustion gas pressure into reciprocating linear force and pivots it onto the spinning crankshaft throws.
PMGR Planetary Starter Motor, Solenoid & Bendix Drive
Permanent-magnet planetary gear-reduction starter that multiplies armature torque 73:1 and disconnects via a 5-roller overrunning clutch.
1–2, 3–4 & 5th–Reverse Borg-Warner Synchronizers
Miniature brass cone clutches and splined dog sleeves that match shaft speeds in milliseconds for clash-free shifting.
Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC), Release Bearing & Quill
Coaxial annular hydraulic actuator that slides directly around the transmission input quill—eliminating external release forks.
Diaphragm-Spring Clutch Pressure Plate & Cover
18-finger Belleville cone spring and nodular iron pressure ring that clamp the clutch disc with over a ton of force.
Part 1: Forged Twin-I-Beam Axles, Radius Arms, Coils & Shocks
Ford’s signature front truck suspension: two cross-pivoting forged steel I-beams paired with coil springs and longitudinal radius arms.
Ford 8.8-Inch Hypoid Ring & Pinion, Differential & RABS
Turns driveshaft torque 90 degrees, multiplies torque through an 8.8-inch hypoid ring gear, and splits wheel speeds in turns.
11.72" Front Vented Disc Brake, 73mm Caliper & Wheel Bearings
Handles over 70% of the truck’s stopping power with radial cooling vanes, a 73mm phenolic caliper piston, and tapered wheel bearings.
