Ford 8.8-Inch Hypoid Ring & Pinion, Differential & RABS
Turns driveshaft torque 90 degrees, multiplies torque through an 8.8-inch hypoid ring gear, and splits wheel speeds in turns.
Role in the System
What This Assembly Is
Inside the 8.8-inch center casting spins the hypoid drive pinion (preloaded by a collapsible crush sleeve between two tapered roller bearings), the 8.8-inch ring gear bolted to the nodular iron differential carrier, two planetary spider gears on a cross-pin shaft, two 31-spline side bevel gears, and the 108-tooth Rear Anti-Lock Brake (RABS) tone ring.
Mechanics & Physics
How the Subcomponents Work Together
Hypoid Offset Geometry: The drive pinion enters the housing 1.50 inches below the centerline of the ring gear. This hypoid offset lowers the driveshaft tunnel under the cab floor and puts more gear tooth surface area in simultaneous sliding-and-rolling contact for quieter, stronger operation.
How Spider Gears Split Speeds in a Corner: When driving straight, the spider gears do not spin on their cross-pin—they act like solid wedges turning both left and right side gears at ring-gear speed. When you turn a corner, the outside wheel must travel a wider arc; the spider gears walk around the slower inside side gear, adding every RPM lost by the inside wheel directly to the outside wheel.
