The 11-Inch Diaphragm Clutch & Concentric Slave Cylinder System
An interactive essay on clamping physics, torsional damper hubs, internal concentric hydraulic release bearings, bleeding procedures, and clutch replacement.
To handle the low-RPM torque of the 4.9L inline-six without heavy pedal effort, the 1994 F-150 pairs a 280 mm (11-inch) Belleville diaphragm clutch assembly with an internal hydraulic Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC) that slides directly over the transmission input quill.
Every time you start out in 1st gear or shift between ratios, the clutch assembly has to perform two seemingly opposite jobs: slip smoothly enough to accelerate a 4,500-pound pickup without chatter, and then clamp with enough normal force to transmit 260 lb-ft of inline-six torque without a hint of slip.
Rather than using a traditional external release fork, pivot ball, and linkage rod—which suffer from bellcrank wear and frame flex—Ford equipped the M5OD-R2 with a self-adjusting hydraulic Concentric Slave Cylinder (F2TZ-7A564-A). Mounted directly inside the bellhousing around the input shaft guide tube, the annular slave piston pushes straight along the centerline of the transmission.

Clamping Geometry: Flywheel, Diaphragm Spring & Tangential Drive Straps
The clutch assembly bolts to the rear face of the 164-tooth cast-iron flywheel (E8TZ-6375-A at X = -418.0 mm) along a 295.0 mm bolt circle. Inside the stamped steel cover (E7TZ-7563-A), a conical Belleville diaphragm spring with 18 radial fingers is trapped between two fulcrum wire rings held by nine standoff rivet pins.
When the clutch is engaged, the outer rim of the diaphragm spring presses the heavy nodular-iron pressure ring forward against the clutch disc. Engine torque reaches the pressure ring through three sets of tangential spring-steel drive straps riveted around the perimeter of the cover—allowing the pressure ring to move axially during release while remaining rotationally locked to the flywheel.
The Driven Disc: Marcel Cushions & Coaxial Torsional Damper Springs
Sandwiched between the flywheel and pressure ring is the 280 mm driven disc (E6TZ-7550-C). Its front and rear organic friction facings are riveted not to a flat plate, but to eight waved spring-steel marcel cushion segments. As you let the clutch pedal up, those waved segments compress roughly 1.2 mm, creating a progressive engagement zone instead of an abrupt on/off grab.
Once clamped, torque flows inward through the steel core plate into four window slots housing coaxial outer and inner coil springs. Because an inline-six fires three times per crankshaft revolution, these damper springs and internal hysteresis friction washers absorb torsional firing spikes before they can rattle the constant-mesh gears inside the M5OD-R2.
Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC) & Hydraulic Quick-Connect Actuation
Pressing the cab clutch pedal pushes the firewall master cylinder pushrod ( simultaneously closing the Clutch Pedal Position safety switch E8TZ-11A152-A to allow starter cranking) and displaces DOT 3 fluid through a high-pressure nylon/braided line into the left side of the bellhousing.
Inside the die-cast aluminum CSC body (F2TZ-7A564-A), fluid enters behind an EPDM U-cup lip seal and drives an annular piston forward along the machined quill tube of the front bearing retainer. Mounted at the nose of that piston is a sealed angular-contact ball release bearing whose rotating outer race presses the 18 diaphragm spring fingers forward—levering the pressure ring rearward over its fulcrum wire rings and freeing the clutch disc.
Common Issues, Failure Modes & Fixes
Internal Concentric Slave Cylinder Fluid Leak
Symptom: Clutch pedal goes soft to the floor, master cylinder reservoir drops, and DOT 3 brake fluid drips from the bottom bellhousing inspection cover.
Root Cause & Fix: When the EPDM piston lip seal inside the concentric slave cylinder wears or scores from old contaminated fluid, replacing the slave cylinder requires pulling the transmission back from the engine. Always install a brand-new CSC and pilot bearing whenever the transmission is out for a clutch job.
Spongy Pedal After Replacement Due to Angled Master Cylinder Air Pocket
Symptom: Even after gravity or pedal bleeding at the CSC bleeder screw, the clutch disengages right off the floorboard.
Root Cause & Fix: The firewall clutch master cylinder (F2TZ-7A543-D) mounts at an upward angle where a small air bubble can trap at the rear of the bore behind the outlet port. Bench-bleed the master cylinder and line tilted nose-up before installation, or stroke the pushrod by hand with the master unbolted from the firewall so trapped air rises straight up into the reservoir.
How to Remove, Inspect & Replace the Assembly
Whenever the M5OD-R2 is removed for clutch service, replace the driven disc, pressure plate cover, concentric slave cylinder + release bearing, and crankshaft needle pilot bearing as a complete matched set.
- Step 1 · Unbolt Concentric Slave Cylinder from Front Bearing Retainer CSC mounting bolts: 8–12 ft-lb (11–16 N·m)
With the transmission removed, unbolt the two M6 hex flange bolts (csc-mounting-bolt) securing the concentric slave cylinder body to the ears of the front bearing retainer quill, and slide the CSC off the quill tube.
- Step 2 · Release Pressure Plate Cover Evenly in a Star Pattern Cover bolts (380795-S2): 15–24 ft-lb (20–33 N·m)
Lock the flywheel ring gear and loosen the six 5/16"-18 pressure plate cover bolts one turn at a time in a diagonal star pattern until diaphragm spring tension is completely relaxed. Remove the cover and driven disc.
- Step 3 · Replace Crankshaft Needle Pilot Bearing & Resurface Flywheel Flywheel-to-crankshaft bolts: 75–85 ft-lb (with thread sealant)
Use an internal blind-hole puller to extract the FC-65354 caged needle pilot bearing from the rear crankshaft counterbore. Inspect or machine the flywheel friction face (X = -418.0 mm), and press the new pilot bearing in with its rubber lip seal facing rearward toward the transmission.
- Step 4 · Center Disc with Alignment Arbor & Torque Cover in Stages CSC bleeder screw after reassembly: 35–53 in-lb
Slide the new 10-spline driven disc (damper hub protrusion facing rearward toward transmission) onto a clutch alignment tool seated in the pilot bearing. Seat the pressure plate cover on the flywheel dowels and tighten the six bolts one turn at a time in a star pattern to 15–24 ft-lb.
