Exhaust & Emissions Control (Thermactor / EGR)

Split Front (Cyl 1–3) & Rear (Cyl 4–6) Exhaust Manifolds

Two separate nodular-iron 3-into-1 exhaust manifolds that eliminate thermal warping and scavenge paired 240° firing pulses.

Role in the System

What This Assembly Is

Instead of a single three-foot-long cast-iron exhaust log that would expand, warp, and crack over thousands of heat cycles, the EFI 4.9L inline-six bolts two independent 3-into-1 nodular iron exhaust manifolds to the right side of the cylinder head: a front manifold serving Cylinders 1, 2, and 3, and a rear manifold serving Cylinders 4, 5, and 6.

Mechanics & Physics

How the Subcomponents Work Together

Paired 240-Degree Scavenging: Look at the 4.9L firing order: 1 – 5 – 3 – 6 – 2 – 4. Notice that firing alternates strictly between the front bank (1, 3, 2) and the rear bank (5, 6, 4)! That means two cylinders on the same manifold never fire back-to-back—giving each 3-into-1 collector evenly spaced 240-degree exhaust pulses that scavenge spent gases cleanly out of the ports without blowback.
