Exhaust & Emissions Control (Thermactor / EGR)
Rather than bolting a single long cast-iron header across six cylinders (which cracks from thermal expansion), the 1994 4.9L uses split 3-into-1 front and rear exhaust manifolds coupled to an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) loop, a belt-driven Thermactor Secondary Air Injection (AIR) system, and a dual-stage three-way catalytic converter.
- Exhaust Manifolds
- Split 2-piece nodular iron (Cyl 1–3 front / Cyl 4–6 rear)
- EGR Control
- Vacuum EGR valve + EVR solenoid + EVP linear position sensor
- Thermactor AIR System
- Belt-driven vane pump + TAB/TAD solenoids + 6-port head rail
- Catalytic Converter
- Dual-brick 3-Way + Oxidation Catalyst with mid-bed air port
Part Assemblies in Exhaust & Emissions
Split Front (Cyl 1–3) & Rear (Cyl 4–6) Exhaust Manifolds
Two separate nodular-iron 3-into-1 exhaust manifolds that eliminate thermal warping and scavenge paired 240° firing pulses.
EGR Valve, EVP Position Sensor & Stainless Exhaust Tube
Meters inert exhaust gas back into the intake manifold under part-throttle cruise to suppress peak combustion temperatures and NOx.
Thermactor Air Pump, Diverter Valve, Check Valve & Rail
Belt-driven rotary-vane air pump and 6-branch cylinder-head manifold that inject fresh oxygen to light off the catalytic converters.
Dual-Stage TWC Catalytic Converters, Muffler & Tailpipe
Dual-branch Y-pipe, heated oxygen sensor, two-stage monolithic honeycombs, tri-flow muffler, and over-axle tailpipe.
