Clutch & Hydraulic Release System

164-Tooth Cast-Iron Flywheel & Needle Pilot Bearing

Rotational inertia reservoir, starter ring-gear interface, primary clutch friction surface, and transmission input-shaft support.

Role in the System

What This Assembly Is

Bolted to the rear flange of the crankshaft with six heavy bolts is the nodular cast-iron flywheel, encircled by a shrink-fit 164-tooth steel starter ring gear and housing the caged needle-roller pilot bearing in its center bore.

Mechanics & Physics

How the Subcomponents Work Together

Smoothing Firing Pulses & Absorbing Launch Heat: The heavy cast-iron disc stores kinetic energy to keep the crankshaft turning smoothly between cylinder firings at low idle, and acts as a massive thermal heat sink on its machined rear face when you slip the clutch to get a loaded truck moving up a grade.

The Tiny Bearing That Saves the Transmission: Pressed into the center of the crankshaft flange is a 16-roller caged needle pilot bearing with an integral lip seal. It supports the tip of the transmission input shaft so the input shaft and crankshaft stay perfectly concentric even when spinning at different speeds.
