M5OD-R2 5-Speed Manual Transmission

1st–5th Helical Speed Gears, Needle Bearings & Reverse Idler

Constant-mesh helical speed gears that freewheel on split needle roller bearings until locked by a synchronizer.

Role in the System

What This Assembly Is

This group contains all the driven and drive speed gears of the M5OD-R2: the mainshaft 1st (38T), 2nd (35T), and 3rd (30T) gears with their split caged needle bearings, the rear-chamber 5th overdrive pair (52T countershaft driving 27T mainshaft), and the 3-gear Reverse train (17T countershaft gear, 25T stationary reverse idler gear, and 38T mainshaft reverse gear).

Mechanics & Physics

How the Subcomponents Work Together

Why Every Gear Spins at Different Speeds at Once: In Neutral, every forward speed gear is already in full helical tooth mesh and spinning! They don’t fight each other because each speed gear rides on a split caged needle-roller bearing around the shaft, freewheeling effortlessly until you select that gear.

How the Reverse Idler Inverts Rotation: Forward gears mesh in two-gear pairs (countershaft to mainshaft), which reverses the countershaft’s rotation back to forward. Reverse inserts a third 25-tooth idler gear on a separate shaft between the countershaft and mainshaft—flipping output rotation backward at -3.39:1.
