M5OD-R2 Aluminum Main Case, Bellhousing & Extension
One-piece rib-reinforced die-cast aluminum bellhousing and gearbox case with internal splash-lubrication gutters.
Role in the System
What This Assembly Is
Unlike traditional cast-iron truck transmissions with a bolt-on bellhousing, the Mazda-engineered M5OD-R2 casts the bellhousing and main gear case as a single lightweight, externally ribbed aluminum housing. Behind the main case sits a steel intermediate bearing retainer bulkhead, the 2WD tapered aluminum extension housing, and the elastomeric rear transmission mount.
Mechanics & Physics
How the Subcomponents Work Together
Two-Chamber Structural Layout: Forward gears 1st through 4th live inside the main case bay ahead of the center bulkhead, while 5th Overdrive and Reverse live in the intermediate bay behind the bulkhead. That center bulkhead supports the middle of both shafts so they cannot deflect apart under heavy low-gear torque.
Directed Splash Lubrication: Because the M5OD-R2 is lubricated with low-viscosity MERCON automatic transmission fluid rather than thick gear oil, the rotating countershaft flings fluid upward into an internal stamped-steel gutter bolted to the case wall, channeling oil forward into the input pocket and shaft bearings.
Other Assemblies in This System
Input Shaft, Output Mainshaft & Pocket Bearings
Two coaxial shafts sharing the exact same upper centerline—coupled through a hollow pocket needle bearing.
Forged Countershaft Cluster Gear & Bearings
One-piece forged lower layshaft carrying four integral helical gears that spins whenever the clutch is engaged.
1st–5th Helical Speed Gears, Needle Bearings & Reverse Idler
Constant-mesh helical speed gears that freewheel on split needle roller bearings until locked by a synchronizer.
1–2, 3–4 & 5th–Reverse Borg-Warner Synchronizers
Miniature brass cone clutches and splined dog sleeves that match shaft speeds in milliseconds for clash-free shifting.
Top Shift Cover, 3-Rail Interlocks, Forks & Lockout Cam
Three parallel shift rails and hardened transverse interlock pins that make selecting two gears at once physically impossible.
Floor Shifter Tower, Lever & Transmission Switches
Direct-turret floor shifter lever, pivot ball bushings, backup lamp switch, neutral sense switch, and VSS drive.
