Ford FS10 10-Cylinder Swash-Plate A/C Compressor & Clutch
Five double-acting axial pistons driven by an angled rotating swash plate to pump R-134a refrigerant in both directions.
Role in the System
What This Assembly Is
Mounted at the upper left of the engine front dress is the Ford FS10 (Fixed Swashplate, 10-cylinder) air conditioning compressor. Modeled with full internal kinematics, it includes the electromagnetic clutch coil and pulley bearing, the central shaft and angled swash plate, five double-ended axial pistons riding on ten hemispherical bronze shoes, axial thrust needle bearings, and front/rear suction-and-discharge reed valve plates.
Mechanics & Physics
How the Subcomponents Work Together
How an Angled Swash Plate Drives 10 Cylinders with Zero Connecting Rods: When you switch on A/C in the cab, 12V current energizes the stationary electromagnetic coil behind the pulley, pulling the front clutch hub tightly against the spinning pulley face. The central shaft turns an angled metal disc (the swash plate) trapped inside the center slots of five double-headed pistons via ten hemispherical slipper shoes.
As the tilted disc rotates, its high point wobbles fore-and-aft around the circle, sliding all five pistons back and forth parallel to the shaft. Because each piston has a compression head on both ends, every single shaft revolution produces ten pumping strokes through one-way steel reed valves.
