Top Shift Cover, 3-Rail Interlocks, Forks & Lockout Cam

Three parallel shift rails and hardened transverse interlock pins that make selecting two gears at once physically impossible.

Role in the System

What This Assembly Is

Bolted to the top opening of the transmission is the ribbed aluminum shift cover housing three parallel 16.0 mm steel shift rails (1–2, 3–4, and 5th–Reverse), three die-cast aluminum shift forks with nylon wear pads, spring-loaded detent balls, hardened interlock pins, and the pivoted 5th-to-Reverse counter-lever and lockout cam.

Mechanics & Physics

How the Subcomponents Work Together

Mechanical Interlock Logic: Between the three parallel rails sit two short hardened steel pins in cross-drilled bores, plus a central cross-pin passing through the middle 3–4 rail. The pin lengths are machined so that when any one rail slides out of its Neutral notch, its full diameter pushes the interlock pins into the side notches of the other two rails—locking them solidly in Neutral.

5th-to-Reverse Safety Gate: When you shift down out of 5th overdrive on the highway, a spring-loaded cam plate on the 5–R rail catches a stop lug so you cannot accidentally pull straight back into Reverse. Only when you let the shifter spring sideways to the center 3–4 neutral gate does the cam reset to allow Reverse selection.
