4.9L Inline-Six Engine

Forged Crankshaft, Harmonic Damper & Seals

The spine of the 4.9L engine: converts six staggered reciprocating strokes into continuous rotary torque.

Role in the System

What This Assembly Is

Running the full length of the crankcase is the seven-main-journal crankshaft, flanked at the front snout by an elastomer-bonded harmonic vibration damper and front lip seal, and at the rear flange by a one-piece fluorocarbon rear main seal.

On an inline-six, the six crank throws are arranged in mirror-image pairs (1 & 6, 2 & 5, 3 & 4) spaced 120 degrees apart. Because every downward piston stroke is mirrored by another pair of pistons, primary and secondary reciprocating inertia forces cancel naturally along the length of the shaft.

Mechanics & Physics

How the Subcomponents Work Together

Torque Conversion & Internal Oil Drilling: Each rod journal is offset by 50.55 mm (half the 3.98-inch stroke) from the main centerline. Diagonal oil passages drilled directly through the crank webs carry pressurized oil from the seven stationary main journals outward to the six orbiting connecting-rod journals.

Torsional Vibration Damping (The Harmonic Balancer): Every time a cylinder fires, the long cast-iron crankshaft twists slightly like a torsion bar and springs back—setting up high-frequency torsional resonance. The front harmonic damper bonds a heavy cast-iron inertia ring to the inner hub through a tuned vulcanized rubber annulus that shears out-of-phase with crank twist, converting destructive torsional vibration into harmless heat.
