Twin-Bore Throttle Body, Butterfly Shaft & Idle Air Control

Dual-butterfly airflow metering for driver pedal response, paired with a computer-modulated Idle Air Control bypass valve.

Role in the System

What This Assembly Is

Bolted to the front entrance of the upper intake plenum is the cast-aluminum twin-bore throttle body. It houses two synchronized brass butterfly plates on a shared throttle shaft, torsion return springs, and the side-mounted electromagnetic Idle Air Control (IAC) valve.

Mechanics & Physics

How the Subcomponents Work Together

Dual-Bore Progressive Airflow: Using two smaller parallel throttle bores instead of a single large bore keeps package height low under the pickup hood while providing smooth airflow modulation off idle.

Closed-Throttle Idle Regulation (IAC): When your foot is off the gas pedal, the twin butterfly plates are nearly closed. To keep the engine idling at a steady 675 RPM—and to raise idle automatically on freezing mornings or when the A/C compressor kicks on—the EEC-IV computer pulses a variable-duty-cycle solenoid in the IAC valve, sliding a pintle to meter air around the closed throttle plates.
