Hydraulic Flat-Tappet Lifter, Pushrod & Rocker Arm

Self-adjusting hydraulic valvetrain linkage that translates camshaft lobe lift into overhead valve motion with zero lash.

Role in the System

What This Assembly Is

Resting on each of the twelve camshaft lobes is a precision hydraulic flat-tappet lifter that pushes a ball-end tubular steel pushrod up through the side of the block to pivot a stamped steel pedestal rocker arm on top of the cylinder head.

Instead of requiring periodic feeler-gauge valve adjustments, each lifter contains a miniature internal hydraulic damper—complete with a precision-lapped plunger, check ball, metering disc, and return spring—that uses engine oil pressure to take up all thermal clearance automatically.

Mechanics & Physics

How the Subcomponents Work Together

Inside the Hydraulic Lifter: Pressurized oil from the main gallery enters a hole in the side of the lifter body and fills the high-pressure chamber below the internal plunger past a tiny one-way check ball. The instant the cam lobe begins to lift the body, pressure spikes under the plunger and slams the check ball shut—turning the trapped oil pocket into a virtually solid hydraulic column.

Controlled Leak-Down & Rocker Leverage: A calibrated micro-clearance between the plunger and lifter bore allows a tiny fraction of oil to bleed past during each lift event so the lifter continuously adapts as the steel pushrod and valve stem expand with heat. At the top of the pushrod, the pedestal-mounted rocker arm multiplies cam lift across its unequal lever arms to push the valve open.
