Cast-Iron Cylinder Head, Valves, Springs & Cover

Twelve inline overhead valves, fast-burn swirl combustion chambers, and concentric coil springs that control cylinder breathing.

Role in the System

What This Assembly Is

Bolted to the block deck with fourteen high-tensile bolts across a multi-layer head gasket, the cast-iron cylinder head houses twelve inline poppet valves (six intake, six exhaust), positive-stop umbrella stem seals, high-tension valve springs with flat-wire friction dampers, split tapered locks (keepers), and positive exhaust valve rotators.

On the 1987–1996 fuel-injected 4.9L, Ford redesigned the combustion chambers into a "fast-burn" heart/kidney shape that induces high-velocity swirl as the air charge enters past the intake valve—improving knock resistance on 87-octane regular fuel.

Mechanics & Physics

How the Subcomponents Work Together

Poppet Valve Sealing & Heat Transfer: An exhaust valve head faces 1,400°F+ gas rushing past its stem 20 times per second at highway cruise. Nearly 75% of the heat absorbed by the valve head conducts out through its 45-degree ground seat during the brief milliseconds the valve is snapped shut by its coil spring.

Why Exhaust Valves Have Rotators: The taller multi-piece retainer on each exhaust valve is a positive rotator mechanism. Each time the rocker arm compresses the spring, internal Belleville washers relieved friction so the exhaust valve rotates a few degrees—wiping carbon deposits off the seat and preventing localized hot-spotting.
