Gerotor Oil Pump, Hex Drive, Pickup Screen & Oil Pan

Trochoidal inner-and-outer rotor pump driven off the distributor shaft that supplies pressurized lubrication to every bearing.

Role in the System

What This Assembly Is

Submerged inside the rear sump of the stamped steel oil pan is the heart of the engine’s life-support system: the screened pickup tube, a cast-iron gerotor (generated-rotor) oil pump, a spring-loaded pressure relief plunger, and the hexagonal intermediate shaft that couples the pump to the bottom of the distributor.

Mechanics & Physics

How the Subcomponents Work Together

Trochoidal Gerotor Pumping Physics: Inside the pump housing, a 4-lobe inner rotor is driven inside a 5-lobe outer ring rotor set on an offset axis. Because the inner rotor has one fewer tooth than the outer ring, the pockets on the inlet side continuously expand—drawing oil up through the submerged mesh pickup screen—while the pockets on the outlet side collapse, forcing pressurized oil up into the block.

Bypass Relief Regulation: At cold high-RPM startup, thick oil could easily exceed 100 psi and blow out the filter seam. A calibrated spring-and-plunger relief valve inside the pump casting cracks open around 60 psi, bleeding excess volume directly back to the inlet side.
